The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 566 is sponsored by this Office and is self supporting through fund raisers and donations. The primary purpose is to introduce its members to Law Enforcement concepts, ideas, techniques, and procedures as they apply to everyday problems in the public field and to involve them under the direction of advisors from the Sheriff’s Office.
To be considered for membership, a person must be between the ages of 14 and 20. The applicant must not have been convicted of any criminal offense, or be under criminal investigation, nor can an applicant be under probation. Explorer Advisors have the right to make personal background checks. Each new Explorer must undergo a 3 month probation period. If any rules or regulations are broken during this time, the Explorer may be relieved of membership.
While a member of the post, an Explorer will be expected to maintain a grade point average of C or better.
The Gaston County Sheriff Explorer Post 566 participates in activities such as:
Community functions, charity functions, Crime Stoppers and Blue Knights Poker Run, Relay for Life, Run for the Money, Special Olympics, Hiking, Camping, and playing various sports.
Training and Learning exercises are conducted in the following areas: traffic stops, domestic calls, armed robberies, building searches, crime scene investigations, jail procedures, court procedures, fingerprinting, radio communications, swat tactics, self defense, hand cuffing techniques, ride along program, and other police procedures.
